The WIREMARK® Golden Pliers is a major feature of the Mystery Creek Fieldays event with the best of the best fencers coming in from all across New Zealand to compete head to head to see who will be crowned winner of the coveted Golden Pliers trophy.

2015 saw a new champion crowned with Tim Stafford taking out a closely fought final on a cold and muddy Thursday morning. Former champion, and later crowned Fencing World Champion Shane Bouskill competed strongly amongst the top 8 but even his wealth of experience and record of as the 2014 champion couldn't match the speed and precision with which Tim executed his final fence-line.

With former glory clearly giving no favors the 2016 event promised to be another closely fought title as Tim will need another stellar performance to defend his title against 7 other of the greatest fencers New Zealand has to offer, unfortunately this was not his year to go back to back.

In a final separated by one 2 points between first and second place, the pairing of father and son, Shane and Tony Bouskil waited on the podium with baited breath to hear who would take the title, with Tony edging his father out the previous year.  2016 was a different story however; with Shanes line being awarded the win based on the quality of his finish closely beating the impressive workmanship of his sons near perfect line.  The win gave Shane his third title and certainly gave the Bouskil's something to talk about over dinner for the next 12 months before the 2017 rematch.

The events were as follows:

  • Heats from Tuesday 14th at 9am;
  • Bill Schuler (Golden Pliers Plate final equivilant) on Wednesday 15th from 9am;
  • The WIREMARK® Golden Pliers National Singles Championship on Thursday 16th from 9am; and,
  • The Fieldays Silver Spades National Doubles Championship on Friday 17th at 10am.
